Wood Sculptures and Garden Art
It’s summer time at The Barn and this year i’m trying my hand at something new. I came across a beautiful collection of old growth redwood roots a couple months ago and hauled them onto my farm.
We’ve begun carving, shaping and sanding them into wood sculptures. These wood sculptures are currently displayed in front of The Barn and the kids are having a blast playing in, on and around them! Ultimately the plan is for these pieces to end up as yard art, at the wild animal park, maybe the San Diego Zoo or a local museum like Balboa Park or even in a corporate setting as pieces of Art.
In the meantime, I've begun shaping and sanding these wood sculptures and preparing them for use as stand alone pieces of art. Although these wood carvings would look amazing sanded and sealed indoors, I have a feeling they will end up being interactive pieces of garden art. People of all ages feel a natural inclination to touch, climb and interact with these pieces so it seems natural that they would live out their days outside.
These roots came from Giant Redwood trees also known as Giant Sequoia. The trees lived to be anywhere between one thousand and three thousand years old before dying of natural causes. Their root systems often become exposed during windstorms and rainstorms when the trees blow over exposing their roots. Once exposed, the roots can be removed with giant chainsaws and loaded atop flat bed 18 wheelers.
Once hauled out, they are power washed to remove rocks, mud, etc. and then finally they are shaped into smaller workable pieces like what we have here today. I am very excited to be working with these wooden sculptures as it is a welcome change from my norm of live edge table making. It’s something i’ve always wanted to dabble in, but never had the time. When it comes to live edge furniture making and wooden sculptures it’s like they say… same same, but different.
I’m very excited about this change and thrilled to be working with these living pieces of history this summer. If you want to see photos and learn more about these wood sculptures please click here to view them posted on my website!
You will notice that each piece has two pricing options in the drop down menu. They are offered “as is” with a rustic sandblasted finish perfect for the outdoors, or sealed for use and display indoors as works of art. Of course if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
